Salathé

California´s Yosemite National Park is the home of one of the most impressive big walls on earth. On El Capitan climbing history has been written - the Nose, Salathé, North American Wall, all of these routes are not just famous, they were also the hardest routes of their times - and last but not least there is no other face on our planet which offers freeclimbing thus fascinating.
In 1995 Alexander plans an expedition to Latok II. To get the necessary experience in bigwalling he visits Yosemite Valley.
His objective: a free ascent of the famous Salathé on the Southwest Face of El Capitan.
1000 metres of climbing on cracks and corners with the crux waiting very high up on the wall: the 80- metre- long and overhanging "Headwall" with difficulties up to 5.13b.
In the following year Thomas also succeeds in doing a free ascent of the Salathé.
