piolet d'or to thomas huber and iwan wolf
|
thomas huber and iwan wolf were awarded the piolet dŽor 2000 for
their new route, shivaŽs line.
the piolet dŽor was created 1991 by franceŽs montagnes magazines and the groupe de haute
montagne for excellent achievements in alpinism.
the reasons for the decision:
shivaŽs line is one of the magic lines in the himalayas. the expedition had a bad start,
alexander had to give up due to tonsillitis. just when thomas wanted to bring down the fixed
lines he had the luck to find with the swiss iwan wolf a new partner.
both did not know each other, and therefor it was a big questionmark, whether they would form
a strong team. it turned out to be perfect - they proved to be the dream team.
the extremly hard days on the mountain, the story, the freindship, which has been created by
curiosity, the difficulity of the route, the style - even though 300 meters of fixed ropes have
been installed, the route has been opened without bolts - all these reasons have been important
for the decision of the jury.
