Cho Oyu
Cho Oyu, at the borderline of Nepal and Tibet, is known as one of the easy 8000ers. In fact, the difficulties on its normal
route are moderate and not more demanding than on most of the 4000ers in the Alps.
Nevertheless, Cho Oyu with its 8201 metres is the sixth highest mountain in the world. Climbing at such high altitude is a
gamble with an ever present danger. The lack in oxygen, deteriorating weather and a sudden drop in temperatures represent a
high risk when climbing an 8000er.
The reason why Alexander and Barbara Hirschbichler decided to climb Cho Oy, one of the not so difficult 8000ers, was to
get experience. On May 19th, 1998 , together with the Austrians Horst Fankhauser and Georg Simair, they start from their
camp at 7000 meters and reach the summit plateau of Cho Oyu after 8 hours of climbing.
