The world hardest routes
Climbing at the cutting edge is an extremely dynamic and powerful sport - physically and mentally.
Climbing the world's hardest routes needs special techniques and enormous power resources. The
German Wolfgang Güllich was one of the first climbers who transferred training-techniques
from other, highly developed professional sports to climbing. Therefore he became the first to
climb a route graded F9a: 'Action Directe'. One year later, in 1992, Alexander became the second
person to climb a route of that grade when he opened his route 'Om'. Till 1996 he put much of his
energy into pushing the difficulties in sportclimbing, with 'Open Air' he established most likely
the hardest route in the sportclimbing world of that time. The three hardest ascents are:
